Ways to Give
Gifts to BUA are tax deductible, and both the fiscal year and the Annual Fund runs from July 1 – June 30. We’re grateful for your support, and we’ll be happy to help you find the method of giving that is most convenient for you.
Online Gifts
To give online with your credit card, follow the instructions on the online giving form. You can make your gift as one payment, or spread your gift into equal installments over a specified number of months. You can also set up a convenient recurring gift; your credit card will be charged the amount you specify each month until you tell us to stop.
Gifts by Mail
To pay by mail with a check:
- Make your check payable to Boston University Academy.
- Note on the memo line of your check how you would like to designate your gift (such as Annual Fund), or attach a note to that effect. If you do not include a designation, your gift will be used for unrestricted support of Boston University Academy.
- Mail your gift to Boston University Academy, 1 University Road, Boston, MA 02215
Matching Gifts
You may be able to double—or even triple—your gift without paying an extra cent. Find out how. Many gifts to BUA qualify for corporate matches, and we are grateful for this additional support! Please note that it is the responsibility of the individual donor to initiate a matching gift request with their employer.
Donor-Advised Fund
A donor advised fund (DAF) is a mechanism that simplifies the administrative burden of fulfilling your philanthropic objectives. DAFs offer the favorable tax benefits of giving directly to charities with added flexibility around timing of gifts. An increasingly popular charitable vehicle, DAFs are an excellent way to both simplify your charitable giving and also facilitate your strategic philanthropic goals. If you have a DAF with BNY Mellon, Fidelity Charitable, or Schwab Charitable, DAF Direct enables you to recommend grants to BUA directly from your fund, and you can use the box on the left to designate them.
“Boston University Academy” may not show up as an option with your DAF. In that case, please select “Boston University” or “Trustees of Boston University” and put “Boston University Academy” in the intended use of contribution field. It is helpful if you notify Margo Cox about your gift so we can ensure that it is directed into the correct fund.
Gifts of Stock and Mutual Funds
To make a gift of stocks or mutual fund, please inform Margo Cox, BUA Director of Development, of the company stock/mutual fund you intend to transfer OR the approximate value of your gift and your stock broker’s name and telephone number, as well as the gift designation. If you wish to make a gift in the form of a corporate, treasury, or other type of bond, please complete the form linked below.
Next, please complete the Boston University Security Transfer form. This form serves as notification of your intention to make a gift of stock or mutual funds to BUA. Completing this form helps both BUA and BU to accurately identify, allocate, and acknowledge your gift. Once completed you will receive an email with transfer instructions to share with your broker. Please note that gifts of stock and mutual funds will be received by Boston University’s general account, but will be directed to BUA in their entirety.

Gifts in Kind

We welcome many gifts-in-kind; information on IRS appraisal requirements of donated gifts-in-kind can be provided to potential donors. Contributions of gifts-in-kind must first be approved by BUA’s Head of School. Please contact Margo Cox, Director of Development, at margocox@bu.edu or 617-358-7135.
IRA Charitable Rollover
If you are 70½ years old or older, you can take advantage of a simple way to benefit Boston University Academy and receive tax benefits in return. You can give up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as ours without having to pay income taxes on the money. This law no longer has an expiration date, so you are free to make annual gifts to BUA this year and well into the future. Learn more on BU’s Planned Giving site, and please contact Margo Cox, Director of Development, at margocox@bu.edu or 617-358-7135 with questions.
Make a Planned Gift
Planned gifts have an enormous and lasting impact on Boston University Academy, creating a legacy for BUA students that lasts for generations. Planned gifts also form part of an overall financial plan that can provide you with significant benefits. For example, planned gifts can help you maintain control of your assets during your lifetime, take advantage of a number of tax benefits, leave a legacy at BUA, and possibly even provide income to yourself or others during your or their lifetime. Unlike gifts of cash, planned gifts typically come from assets in your estate, rather than disposable income. Explore planned giving here.
